The Heartbeat
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. – Matthew 6:21

It was a dozen or fifteen years ago that I attended the Street Rod Nationals East event that is held annually in York, PA. This is what most people would call a "hot rod" car show. It is incredibly impressive. Most of the cars were from the 20s to the 50s and all were highly customized. The amount of design work, body sculpturing, chroming, painting and putting in engines much bigger than the cars had originally is just amazing. As part of the event there is a time when most of the cars are driven around York in a parade. Car after car after car…wow!

So anyway, I went to this event. In my mind I think I had Daniel with me and he was in high school at the time. If there were a thousand cars there, probably a good 10% were for sale. I have never had a hankering to build or to own a hot rod, but after one has looked at a couple hundred of them you start thinking, "Well, if I owned one I would want…" As we looked around we saw one for sale for $28,000, and then one for $42,000; still another was $57,000; while one that needed to be finished could be purchased for $18,000. It became clear after an hour or two that to buy a quite nice hot rod it would cost about $30,000. Thirty thousand dollars…yep, that would do it. As I didn't have (and still don't have) that kind of money, there was no real temptation to buy. But I clearly recall having that number stuck in my mind: $30,000.

As things would be, it was only a week or two later that some terrible natural tragedy hit somewhere in the world (a tsunami, or an earthquake…I really don't recall what it was). But at church the following Sunday it was agreed among the church leaders that, as a church, we should try and be of help to that part of the world. We would attempt to put together a "short-term mission team" to help in the relief effort and we would collect money to go to that part of the world to help those in need. And so that was announced at church. Though I never knew what anyone ever gave, I was told by the church treasurer after church that Sunday, "One person gave $30,000 to the relief effort." I was amazed and impressed. If that person had given $25,000 or even $40,000 I don't think it would have made quite the same impression on me. But the fact that the person gave EXACTLY the amount that Daniel and I had just concluded was THE FIGURE needed to buy a really decent hot rod seemed more than coincidental.

Thirty thousand dollars could have bought for that donor a really nice hot rod. They could have had a great car for that money…or they could give it to some people in need. Yes, as Jesus said, where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
