Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. - Psalm 127:1
I'm all for making plans. I'm all for dreaming and visioning and thinking big. I'm all for finding a purpose…a goal…something to shoot for and going after it with all you have. I recently watched a short video in which Arnold Schwarzenegger challenged the viewers to set goals for their lives and then to work hard at accomplishing those goals. He said, "You will never get anywhere with your hands in your pockets" (i.e., doing nothing. So do something!).
But Psalm 127:1 is a stiff reminder that unless God is in it…unless God is at the heart of what we have dreamed, planned and are working hard to accomplish…it is all vanity and will ultimately come to nothing. What a tragedy it would be to work one's entire life with a clear vision towards some goal, some aspiration, some dream, only to find, at life's end, that it was all for nothing.
In less than two months, the elders of this church will be meeting to discuss, among other things, our vision for the future.
- What do we believe God wants to do with Burning Hearts?
- Why are we here?
- What should be our niche, our place, in God's kingdom?
- Where do we desire to see the church be in 5 or 10 years?
- How can this church, working with other churches, impact our greater community?
On and on the list of questions goes. Every one of these questions is worth considering, discussing and formulating ideas and strategies around. But in the end we must come back to the basic question: What is God doing (building) and how can we be part of it?
At the time of the American Civil War, both sides suggested that God was on their side. But it was Abraham Lincoln who wisely said, "Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right." In like manner, we can make lots of plans HOPING that God will bless those plans. But all the while the more important thing is that we find out what God is doing and attempt to be involved in that work. Jesus said of himself that he did not come (to earth) to do his own will but to do the will of him who sent him (John 6:38). That's what we want to be doing: God's will. Nothing more; nothing less. For unless we are doing God's will, then it is all in vain.
And that, my friends, is why we need to listen to God. That is why we need to seek the face of God. That is why you should pray for your pastor and elders that they would be holy men who would humbly seek after God, seek to do His work and will, and seek to know what direction is best for Burning Hearts. Please pray to that end. Please. Thank you.
