The Heartbeat

I hope you are still excited about pastoring Burning Hearts Community Church. In some ways, this whole experience has been more like getting married, given the protracted engagement period. Usually when people decide to take a job, or even to buy a house, only days or a few weeks go by before the change actually occurs. But in your case, it will have been well over 18 months from the time that we initially interacted with you and the day you begin work at Burning Hearts. So we trust you are still excited about it.

This leads me to write to you about the seeking of men's approval. Jesus talked about this and the scriptures warn about it. Many people live as "men pleasers" or "people pleasers" and not as God pleasers. I saw Kim Kardashian on the news recently and she was talking about how she has lived her entire life as a people pleaser and that she is done with doing that. My hope was that she was going to say, "For now I am going to live my life as a God pleaser." But that is not what she said. Instead she said that she is now living to first of all please herself instead of those around her. She said she is now seeking her own happiness first before seeking the happiness of others, including her own children.

Justin, I think you can do better than Kim Kardashian as a role model. How did Jesus put it? "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you" (Matthew 6:33). Seek first God and His kingdom, His ways, His rule, His law. And then, as they say, "let the chips fall where they may." The Lord will watch out for you and watch over you. You will be fine. You need not fret or worry. Just seek God's will day in and day out and you will do fine.

By His Grace,
Doug Winne
