The Heartbeat
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. – Romans 8:14

This past week, in a very concrete way, Ruth and I were reminded of our need to be led by the Spirit of God. Without getting into details I can tell you this: that a situation was put before us wherein we felt that we needed to confront someone about something that was going on in their life. The confrontation was enough of a challenge but the ramifications of that confrontation could have been very great (and financially challenging for us). But after discussing it we went ahead and did what we knew we needed to do. The person whom we confronted could have given us grief…major grief. But instead, they acknowledged the problem and graciously said they would change. We were overcome with gratitude: both to God and to the person. What could have been a disaster was averted. And now all is well.

I have spoken about this issue of being led by the Spirit of God many times, and I am sure I have written about it many times as well. But I want to encourage you all to be Spirit-led followers of Jesus. I want to encourage you to do what you believe God is prompting you to do.

Recently, on one of those rainy days, I passed a woman at the side of the road who was getting drenched in the rain. I had an umbrella in my car and I felt God saying, "Give her your umbrella." As I drove past the woman all kinds of excuses came up in my mind like "I don't know the woman; I am now heading away from the woman; I will have to make a U-turn at the light and I'm not sure that is legal; by the time I get turned around she may be gone; she may not understand my act of kindness…" When the light turned, I made the U-turn and headed back with the umbrella. In the end, even though I did not give her the umbrella (that is a long story why) I felt I had done what God wanted me to do. The point is that instead of making all kinds of excuses I just needed to obey. In the words of Nike, "Just do it!"

May God help us to be a Spirit-led congregation. James 1:19 talks about being "quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger." May we also be "quick to hear, slow to argue, quick to obey."

So listen to God, be sensitive to His promptings, and just do what you know you are to do. Be assured that God will honor you for your obedience. Yes, He will.
